Default Sticking sea glass to a painted plywood back board?

Hey guys/girls I am new to this crafting. I am making a present for my sister that requires me to stick small pieces of sea glass in mosaic form onto a painted plywood backboard in a picture frame. It needs to dry clear so that it doesnít spoil the aesthetic. I tried using a silicone sealant but it just wasnít strong enough sticking to the wood and the pieces of glass would fall off easily if knocked. I would like something that once dry is permanent. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Iím surprised clear silicone sealant hasnít worked, I come across gas fires that are very successfully glued to marble surrounds with it...that said, did you seal the wood at the back first before sticking?...It can tend to be less adhesive on porous surfaces...clear silicone sealant is much stronger than coloured.

Hey Dave, thanks for the reply. The silicone sealant seemed to stick to the glass pretty well but when pressed gently the sea glass bits peeled straight off the wood. The plywood back board is painted using Annie Sloan chalk paint and then I distressed it and clear waxed over it. Maybe the clear wax is causing the problem, any thoughts?

When the glass peels off is any of the paint finish attached to the back of the glass? I wonder if the problem is that you are gluing the glass to the paint finish and not the wood and the finish itself is not very well adhered to the plywood.

Have you done any experiments with gluing direct to the plywood or leaving out the wax? Chalk paint is very flaky by design and so might not be giving a good solid surface to adhere the glass to.

Do some experiments with scrap bits of wood and glass, see how you get on.

Yeah, Iíd paint the wood with 50/ 50 mdf and water first, if you are painting it, Iíd maybe pva/ water that too, let it dry then it should have shirked 99% of its absorbent properties so the silicone sealant has the best chance of adhesion..silicone sealant needs about 3-4 hours to dry properly depending on thickness and room temperature.
