Acrylic paint seems to be the general choice to paint wooden boxes. I know this might seem like a silly question but why isn't just normal gloss preferred? Is it to do with the finish or cost? TIA 😊

Hi Kazsimp, the choice of medium to colour wood is perhaps a very personal one relating to aesthetics. Choice is also dependent on many technical concerns. Acrylics can be purchased in small or large quantities, they are low odour, fast drying, wash clean with water, can be diluted and mixed easily, their pigmentation can be quite dense providing good coverage. Acrylics come in various quality standards from 'budget' to 'artist quality' - the later are usually very stable, have dense/strong pigmentation, and are less prone to degradation with time and exposure...

These are some technical benefits of acrylic some are shared with other colouring media.

I prefer to use stains which allow the wood figuring to show through....

    Hi
Acrylic paint is wonderful on wood since it's very versatile, holds up very well and is water resistant. Often oil based paints will crack after a little use however, acrylic paint is always in good condition.

Kazsimp I agree with Raif's comments on the benefits of acrylics to decorate your work.
