Fantastic idea and also check out PicMonkey it is a free photoshop type of online photo editing system which whilst easy enough for newbies to pick up is comprehensive enough to give some nice effects and sort out any lighting background problems too.

You can do activities that are good for better photos:-
    Familiarize yourself with your camera
    Hold your camera properly
Set the camera's resolution as high as possible
Look your subject in the eye
    Use a plain background
    Use flash outdoors
    Move in close
    Move it from the middle
    Lock the focus
    Know your flash’s range
    Watch the light
    Take some vertical pictures

As an update here, now that PicMonkey charges for usage, check out also Polarr which is free and just as good. Flash doesn't work well when photographing jewellery, but agree that a white background (I bought an A3 tracing table on ebay for £9.99 recently which does the trick and is sometimes better if you don't light it. Take it near a window or outside if you can, then 'touch it up' in Polarr tends to give some nice results:

For photos I have an old fashioned carmera which has a mircro lens on it, but I am sure most of the modern phones will give you that same effect. If I am doing some vids I normally pop my phone above the white table and video straight downwards.

I've recently started making photos as a hobby. It's a pity I can't see the link to the blog mentioned by this thread's author, but some links still work, so I'll look through them. thanks!
