I tried it (many years ago) but never really took to it - preferred to do crochet lace, hairpin lace etc. You need a tatting shuttle - there's a website...

You can get 'bent' cable needles now, so they don't slip with the cable stitches on so easily. I tend to use bamboo, as I find they aren't slippy needles...
