  • Making Fabric Gift Bags

I have lots of fabric to make gift bags but it is the top part I struggle with ... making it to tie with ribbon or a draw string bag. I hem the opening but overall making the top look neat.

Does anyone have any simpler ideas ? Is is my simple and I'm just hopeless lol!!!

    Hi Lesley,

I think the best bet may just be to experiment with a few ideas and then see which one you like the best. You could of course put a drawstring in, which is is fairly neat and commonplace. It would look particularly dressy with some ribbon as the drawstring. Or perhaps a velcro fastening top? Maybe little sew in press studs? I don't know whether any of these ideas are of any use, but good luck.

Hi Lesley, what I do is turn down the raw edge by 1/4" and then by 1/4" again and press in place. Turn down again 3/4" and press in place then sew 1/8" from the edge. That will give you a channel to feed your ribbon or drawstring through. I find it easiest to do all the pressing before I sew the front and back together but of course you need to make sure they line up properly.
