  • Real Birch Leaf Necklace - Copper and Beads

    Hi Folks,
Not been posting on here for a while. I've had my head down, busy making things, redoing the website and a whole host of other things. Good to get back on here again. Thought I would show a little of what I have been up to:

Real Birch Leaf Copper Beaded Necklace 01.jpg
I don't remember being only allowed to upload thumbnail size images? Oh well, its late and I will take a look next time. I took a birch leaf and carefully plated it with copper so it didn't loose any detail but is as strong as any solid pendant.

Then I put it with beads and wire.

My plating is coming on really nicely after months of various problems. Sometimes I felt like giving up as it was too difficult but when a piece is good, its outstanding, really satisfying.

My pics are getting better. They are more cleaner and crisper but I think the plain backgrounds don't do the jewellery justice so more work and development there.

That's what I have been up to. Hope you enjoy the work!

    Leigh

      Thanks Seahorse

I haven't got gold ones yet. Prices of precious metals make buying the materials a considerable investment. I am working on selling copper to fund the next stage of silver and gold. Plus I will be refining the technique until then

Lovely work and nice website too.

I got my equipment from these here.......gaterosplating.co.uk

Good people and easy to talk to, and the cheapest that I've found so far for equipment and materials.
They are quick to dispatch too.

I have moved over to plating acorns but not to your standard though. I then nickel plate them and finally brush plate them in gold.

I am having problems getting the conductive paint (I've tried copper and graphite) smooth as I have to put 2-3 coats on and I'm losing definition.

I have bleached the acorns, washed them in soap and water, oven dried them and then acrylic varnish them before applying the conductive paint.

The acorns never seem to lose their "waxyness" but the water break test fails, but I can get it to work on oak leaves......strange!

I think I might try Meths.....soaking 1st and if that doesn't work, drinking it lol.

A few tips and pointers from yourself would be nice please

        Kind regards

        Vik

bigger, fatter, shinier acorns, but that is of interest, only to pigs. Our faith gives us knowledge of something better, that we can become oak trees.”

I have my eyes closed, I shan't look (again) and you can't make me!

Oh, they are lovely and the idea of plating found things is sooooooooooooooooooo tempting! If I remember rightly I used to paint leaves with a rubbery stuff and peel it off... but that was many, many years ago!

Both of you should show us more..... lots and lots more pretty please
