  • DIY Kids PLay/Cubby house

This is not a new project. I completed it in 2008. I ordered it online, thinking that a DIY cubby would be 4 walls, a floor and roof. A few screws and nails and there you have it. Nooo!!! How wrong I was. In fact, a pallette was delivered to my house containing a million separate pieces of pine. The only 'kit' part of it was that all the cutting was done for you. But, it did come with good instructions and I learnt a great deal about construction. So much so that I built a little boat (see pic) from the left over pieces. 2 years later and both the boat and cubby are still going strong. It was only this afternoon that I sat on the patio and was served an afternoon tea of muddy water and leaf salad....

Cubby houses provide tons of fun for children so if your kids are begging you for their very own cubby house, the planning stage is vital to ensure that you end up with the perfect cubby house for your kids.
If you like the idea of DIY but don't want to build a cubby house entirely from scratch, you can buy a DIY cubby house kit. These come with pre-cut materials and detailed instructions. All you have to do is slot the pieces together as the instructions say, and fasten them together with some basic tools.

That looks lovely. In fact I wouldn't mind a cubby house for myself, somewhere to escape to if needed.
When my boys were small and money was scarce I made them a little hut with 5 1/2 plywood panels It lasted two summers, and the boys loved it.
