  • Encaustic Art

Last night i got to play with some new stock and this is what i came up with. For those who don't know what encaustic art is, it's melting waxes on a special little iron then applying it to a piece of glossy card. You can create all types of effects by lifting, tilting the iron. Hopefully i will improve with practice.

      Hi Emma,

That looks lovely. I had a chance to try out encaustic a couple of years ago, and I enjoyed it a great deal. Although I did have a lot of wasted attempts that I re-used lol.

You don't need talent to be artistic you just need patience!

        Thats great!

Have seen people produce amazing pictures and fancied a go, but don't think I have enough of the "artist" in me!!

          Thanks for your comments.

Lisa - it's the easiest thing ever, all you do is put some wax on an iron then put it on the card, the effects/patterns seem to make them self.

You don't have to be artistic (i'm not), the picture just seems to happen.

I'm going to do a few more and make greeting cards with them. The best thing is no matter how hard you try you'll never get two pictures that look the same so each one will be unique (sp?)

Have seen these before but didn;'t know what the proper term was called!! That is great. Our post office has a couple frame don their wall and I always stand there staring at them whenever I go in, whoever did them has managed to make some really lovely scenes with them, one is like a mystcial castle type thing on top of a hill, very clever!!

I'm doing a craft fair locally in November and the lady who organises it does Encaustic art. I wasn't really sure what it was, but here's her website :

Ooooh, you make me want to get out my encaustic stuff and have a play.

For those of you that haven't tried it. It is a brilliant medium to work with. I never know how I want the picture to turn out. Just add colours and see what develops. As you progress you can see things forming and starting to take shape, pretty much by accident.

My kids love it (once they are old enough to be trusted with a hot iron!) as there is no right or wrong, and you can't make mistakes.
