Just finished this for a competition

I was given a piece of Laburnum wood which has this very distinctive colouring between the sapwood (on the outside) and the heartwood (through the middle) and decided I would make a globe on a plinth that was reminiscent of those old ones that used to be popular. After rough shaping it it split in about 6 different places and I all bt threw it out. Instead I filled the splits with a darker sawdust mixed with a glue and finished it off. The splits actually work (for me at least) as they seem to represent the lines of longitude on the globe.

The globe is hollowed out and is 6" dia lat. and 5" dia long. The finials are 3" long each and identical and the plinth (which I am going to go back and darken as I don't think it works this colour) is also 3"

Wow! This is gorgeous! It makes me want to touch it, I love turned wood. It is truly beautiful, and strikingly original. Never seen anything like it before.

Now I understand why you collect pots of sawdust, lol! It made no sense before!

Oh my, that is beautiful! I like the dark lines too, may have been a real pooper for you when it happened, but you def. used them to your advantage.

Am I that transparent? Actually, I don't think I would want to add too much if anything on a piece as elegant as that.

Lovely! You're right, the splits do add a nice feature. The colours are amazing.

Wow! You must have some patience - not to mention skill - to do incredible work like that.

                        laburnum globes

They are beautiful and it was very clever and effective to mix darker sawdust with glue to fill the cracks. They add a lot to the globes!

Thak you for all the compliments. I do not have patience but get around that by having several projects on the go at the same time.

The trick with sawdust and glue is used to hide cracks or to do inlay usually. It's both cheap and effective. I also use brass dust and filings I scrounged from a key cutter. Some people used crushed stone as well for different effects

Really lovely neat work. I love the graining on the globes and I think that the darker lines work too!
