I was given a piece of Laburnum wood which has this very distinctive colouring between the sapwood (on the outside) and the heartwood (through the middle) and decided I would make a globe on a plinth that was reminiscent of those old ones that used to be popular. After rough shaping it it split in about 6 different places and I all bt threw it out. Instead I filled the splits with a darker sawdust mixed with a glue and finished it off. The splits actually work (for me at least) as they seem to represent the lines of longitude on the globe.
The globe is hollowed out and is 6" dia lat. and 5" dia long. The finials are 3" long each and identical and the plinth (which I am going to go back and darken as I don't think it works this colour) is also 3"
