  • Spirits of The Wild Hunt

Thought I would let you know how I am doing on my latest project.

This is themed on 'Herne the Hunter'. It will be titled 'Spirits of the Wild Hunt'

Short intro to one aspect of the Herne story.

One story goes that Herne was a gamekeeper to King Richard II, who rescued the king when he was about to get gored by a stag. Herne himself was gored as he slit the stags throat, but healed by a magician called Philip Urswick. Urswick had made a pact with other gamekeepers jealous of Herne in order to make Herne lose his skills. Urswick cut off the stags antlers and tied them to Hernes head.

Herne recovered but the antlers grew to his head and he lost his skills. Heratbroken he rode into the forest and hung himself. There is more to the story but essentially Urswick demands payment for cursing Herne. Herne prior to this had appeared in front of the gamekeepers and they had chased him.

Not gaining his payment Urswick cursed the gamekeepers with Riding the Wild Hunt forever. Again the story continues with Herne speaking to the King and the King had hanged the gamekeepers for poaching. The curse in play when they were killed ensured that indeed they did become the Wild Hunt, collecting the souls of the dead.

A good wiki should tell the whole storty.
Herne has also been likened to Cernnunos by many also. Imagery of the Wild Hunt in is also seen in Saxon, Celtic and Norse myth too.

My representation below, is still in a developing stage as yet, but I have concentrated on an image of Herne himself leading the Wild Hunt. I have incorporated my version of a faceplate/helmet treasure find, with the stylised stag horns also serving as a great bough. Still in development at this stage I hope to have the figures represented as low detail spirits running through Windsor forest.

      Thanks Daesul.

I have added some more detail as I slowly build the picture up.
Still a lot to do yet,

I stand in admiration of your skill and the quality of your work though I have to confess the subject matter of this one is not my cup of tea. I would love to be able to do it though LOL. Keep 'em coming and ignore my lack of taste though

Fabulous work again Steve. Like Pete I prefer the first one but can't fault the skill and artistry of the piece.

Thanks Mo. I am trying to get together around 15 pieces (unless I run out of ideas Lol), so will be interspersing them with myth themes and my decorative related works. I will not be doing all ones related to stories, as a lot of the stories do tell very similar tales. I may do one or two none Celtic pieces too, to try and show a bit more variety to my work.

                    This piece is finished.

I had to darken the border to make the inner area glow a little better and not be outshone by the original border.
Not my best work, but I think it shows the 'Spirits of The Wild Hunt' theme adequately.

I did this in a lot of pointilist style, as opposed to wholey shaded. It works up to a point.

Eight more projects to go. May do a couple of none Celtic next after a break. It's been almost two months solid burning so far in the 7 pieces I have done already, averageing up to 10 hours a day. This last one was very time consumming with the pointilism, somewhere between 70-80 hours I think in total.

                    Well, hope you like.

Photo is not the best as it does not show all the finer detail and is a bit washed out, but best I can do with the camera I have atm.

My eyes are just popping out on stalks. That is a most amazing piece of work, and I love the Celtic-ness washing through it. Like Pete [Bodrighy] said, the subject matter is not to my taste but your skill is truly outstanding.

Thanks Heather, glad you like it. Was a tough one to get a lot of fine detail in without muddying it too much, but I scraped through I think.
