Finishing Pyrography items

What do you guys use to finish your projects? Whats the best product to use?

Hi there

I've recently started using Mylands Sanding Sealer. It's a bit pricey, but lasts for ages. I usually put 3 coats on a piece - it dries very quickly so there's only a few minutes to wait between coats.

In the past I've also used Melamine Sealer by Chestnutt. Another very good finish which also dries very quickly. Unfortunately I can't buy it locally, but the Mylands is stocked by a paintshop just down the road.

Whatever sealer I have used I finish off with a beeswax polish - it gives the work a lovely warm sheen.

A swift blow to the back of the head!!....lol.

I use a cheap satin finish varnish for basic sealing and this is enough to "fix" the design. Any further finish after this is entirely optional.... if it is a deep design you may need to use a second coat but again... it all depends on the use the piece will be put to... if it is purely decorative then there is no need for a hardwearing finish.
