  • How to paint wooden items please?

I have accumilated a number of wooden items and would like to pain them to give them a new lease of life.
    Ive sanded them.
Do I then add a layer of light coloured emulsion, then add my colour?
What about varnish, can I varnish over the paint?Whats best to use.
    Heeelp!!

You can use emulsion or acrylics, or even a mixture of both.

Whatever you start with, make sure you sand between layers - it's (IMO) the most important part of getting a good finish. Water based paint will raise the grain of the wood and you'll need to smooth it out again. A fine/medium sandpaper is often enough.

You can prime if you like but with acrylics not strictly necessary. Likewise with varnish - depends on where it's going and what you've used for paint. Acrylics are usually harder wearing than emulsions.

Hope that helps - and enjoy yourself! Experimenting is part of the fun.

Acrylics and PVA (water-based) varnish, rub down in between.

Acrylics is the best option or you can go for emulsion as well.
