Ok guys ... need your help ... I found a plank of wood in the offcuts bin at the local lumber yard and turned a surprisingly good platter out of it as per picture. The question is... What is the wood? Am I right in thinking mahogany? This is the only problem with using free offcuts is that Im not sure of all the woods and so have no idea what to write on the base ... dont want the timber police doing me for misrepresentation...lol

It's a modern mahogany as opposed to the old Spanish mahogany. It is probably very light weight, and cuts easily though pretty dusty. May have had a spicy smell to it? If you put some black stain on it then wipe off immediately while still on the lathe you can antique it and make it look really old like this

Nice looking platter by the way. You seem to be getting a good finish which is 3/4 the battle in this game. What size is it?

I thought it might be mahogany and yes it was fairly light and dusty as hell... had to wear the respirator even when using the initial gouge!!... great tip about the ageing though! The platter is 9in diam and 1in deep and I have enough of the plank left for another two platters so, not bad for free!

                Apology accepted LOL

Oh my that's so sad Duke resorting to "ogling" wood. Nice tight grain, produces a nice finish, easy to work, blunts your tools, yep you're right, suppose its the same as ogling women LOL
