Can this be done with gold?

    Hello

I know very little when it comes to pottery or ceramics, here I refer to the making of it, not the using of it

I work with gold leaf and imitation gold leaf.

I am curious to know how gold is applied to ceramics, can it be fired onto the surface. or is it applied after the piece has been made.

In bookbinding the gold is applied last of all, I wonder if it is the same with ceramics?

    Thank you

    Richard

        gold in ceramics

        Hi Richard!

I'm new around here, (hello everybody) and this is my first thread, so here goes.

We do use gold/silver etc in ceramics but not in the same way as bookbinding. The precious metals come in the form of a liquid called 'lustres' and you can get all different types of colour. I have no idea if they do actually have any precious metals in them, but they are quite expensive so I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

To apply them to your work first you must fire and glaze (and fire again) before you can apply them. They are painted on and then fired again at a much lower temperature, I think around 700 degrees C. You have to apply them on top of a glaze (i.e. a non porous surface) or they don't work. I know I tried!

        Hope this helps!

          I fire lustres to 780 degrees C.
Gold lustre is quite difficult to get right. If you apply it too thinly you get a sort of purplish colour. If you apply it too thickly it flakes off.

Lustres do contain real metals, they are metal in suspension.
