  • Micro Maille Dragonscale

    Hi,

I would really love to make a micromaille dragonscale bracelet. I was thinking size 0.6mm wire? (this is the smallest I can find). Can anyone help with the ring sizes for a micromaille dragonscale? I have made a 0.6mm 4 in 1 bracelet (I love it!). I would like to add this to my collection

    Thanks in advance

I do a lot of micromaille, and the ARs are no different to anything else. As long as the small rings fit inside the large, a dragonscale can work. I'd be careful with this though, as you really need an AR around 6 for the larger rings for this weave (ie an ID of around 3.6mm, which can just about be sized down to 3.5mm provided you keep your small rings at no more than 2.25mm ID), and that's very large for such a small gauge, which can make it pretty fragile. You would really need to be using fully hard wire to stand any chance of keeping the closures tidy.

I can't offer any help I'm afraid but I'd love to see the finished piece if you manage to find the correct wire to work with...I've made a few chainmaille pieces and I attempted dragonscale once but I think I had the wrong size rings...tempted to have another go now

        Hi George,

Thank you for your reply. I'm going to cut some copper rings to see if it will work. I found a thread on another forum. They suggest 0.6mm 3mm rings and 0.5mm 2mm rings. I want to make it as small as possible. It will probably take me months to complete!!!

I think you'll find the rings will be desperately soft in copper - and it's going to be really hard to maintain the closures. On the bright side, you'll be able to work the whole thing without pliers Good luck!

I envy you having the eyesight to do micromaille. My poor old hacked-around eyeballs just can't cope with anything that small Look forward to seeing some pics, though - those I can enjoy

              Hi George,

I'm going to try the weave out in copper first to make sure I have the sizes right before I cut hundreds of rings

Sarah - I will post a picture as soon as it's finished. May take me a while to finish it though
