So my first question on this site...
I want to start using letter punches. I really like the little words & messages that you can write using them. Can you give me some tips on how to do this? For a start what thickness of sterling silver should I use? Do I need to anneal it first? I've not bought the punches yet but was thinking about getting them from Cooksons. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I haven't quite come up with final designs yet but was thinking some kind of pendants with charms on them saying things like 'Love' 'Happiness' - that kind of thing (sounds really corny now!!). I was planning on doing this on flat silver, not on rings or bangles.

        Hi Vikki,

Yes, you'll need to anneal the silver sheet first to get a deep mark. Using a liver of sulfur solution would also help the lettering stand out (it will blacken the silver and give it an "aged" look).

Because you are stamping the silver, I would use 1mm sheet but you might get away with 0.8mm. Experiment and see what you like!

Thanks for that! I'm looking forward to experimenting with it.
