cookson gold - they are online, and probably the biggest and best place for tools and buillion. I am not a fan of the plastic ring mandrels - wooden ones are useful sometimes, but a proper one will last and they aren't too pricey.

Cooksons are great, but they're expensive if you're just starting out. There are some great deals on ebay, or from places like proops for basic jewellery making tools. I can't think of anything a plastic mandrel would be useful for (except perhaps wirework rings, but even then it wouldn't last long IMO! I'd avoid aluminium too - useful for sizing, but not for working.

A reasonable steel mandrel shouldn't cost you more than about a tenner and will last pretty much forever.
