Does anyone else here not really like freshwater pearls?
I think theyre nice to look at and i like the 'random' nature of them but-
I can't make anything NOT look like wedding jewellery
    It looks fussy, old fashioned
I can't make anything fun with pearls

Also I don't like the idea of how they were created

and ive just ordered some!! although i do like them in pendants i dont have anything to coordinate with the pearls. It's difficult to match!

I also have some coral beads i can't use, but think of how they are stolen from the sea perhaps!

    What beads/materials do you dislike?

well i really like freshwater pearls, a lot more than swarovski ones, i really like the randomness of them, but then i make wedding stuff haha

I dont really like semi precious stones, just stringing them on is boring for me really

actually i really really hate stringing anything!

I agree with you - I struggle with pearls too, although they're in fashion at the moment, I can't help but think of weddings or grandmas. Perhaps mixing them with other styles of beads will help reduce the wedding factor?

I might just use for earrings AND mix! black and white ones left, black ones will go with obsidian, white ones will go with grandmas

ordered some caramel coloured freshwaters cos I thought they looked quite classic in an evening wear black and drink Baileys kindof way! I have a design in mind already. Haven't used swarovski pearls, but got bored of glass pearls /round beads for stringing, can't think of what else to do with them.

It helps to picture what to make bvefore purchasing! it's actually quite difficult to buy stones for jewellery making as there is so much variety (and so little space!!)

Hate stringing aswell but like the result oddly! It just takes soo long, then you find an error and have to start again. I like chip beads as theyre off centre.

        - Pretty earrings

I think pearls go nicely with other beads but yes, on their own they are a bit wedding-ish! I've done some necklaces with pastel coloured glass pearls which I think will be great for spring and I bet darker ones mixed in with other beads would look nice for autumn and winter.

Incidently, this is the first time I've shown my work on the forum, so be gentle

I love pearls but not being a jeweller myself I don't know the difficulties behind the construction process, so only enjoy the end product, after all the swearing I suppose!! I wear black or white pearl stud earrings everyday and have a number of other little pieces too. One of my favourite rings is an inch long, narrow bumpy pearl wrapped with gold wire. Another one is a white button pearl bracelet, each a tiny bit bumpy. And I have a beautiful antique one, I was hoping it was a Shetland pearl, about a cm size with a tiny little dark sapphire next to it. I wore white pearls for my wedding so I can see what you mean, hehe

I do quite like freshwater pearls but the holes are always so small and I have to ream them before I can put them onto head pins. I too hate stringing beads as it's so time consuming and for very little reward.
                      Best wishes

I've used FWP with lampwork beads, they seem to match quite well with the 'handmade' quality of the lampwork.

If you think they are too "grandma" or wedding-ish" then don't use cream ones but go for colour. There are some stunning colours available in dyed pearls and the design possibilities are endless.

And if you have got cream ones to use up, try teaming them any natural or autumnal gemstones and also some swavs in brown shades as they make a great contrast.

I knew Net would have to get involved in this thread, her work with pearls is many times stunning, she seems to have an affinaty with them, I think you either love or hate them. People come to the stall usually asking about wedding stuff but going away in a few weeks with something they will keep for life not just for the wedding day.
Not saying any more, shes already had a new dress out of todays takeings

I love the look of pearls but not their upkeep...
soldering charms with peals in is a real pain
you cant dip them to keep the silver clean
they don't like soaps, perfumes, heat....
but I still like em ~ go figure
