  • Split rings???????

Ok, maybe this will make me sound really stupid but...What do you use split rings for?????? I have been making jewellery for over 3 years (taught myself) and have never ever worked out what to use them for. I hope its not something silly and obvious....

    I THINK I MIGHT KNOW??
I know I have just left this post but I asked my mum and she said that its for the clasp part on bracelets and necklaces (coz jump rings can pull open) But, is there any other use for them?? I got some in a kit a few years ago and have never used them!!!

You can affix small charms to bracelets with them too

I have used them for clasps and charms attachment as they are more secure than jump rings. Good if you dont have to open them though, can be quite though on the old nails. Although you can buy a tool to do so.

Thanks so much, I will go to my nearest craft shop and ask about what I need to hold them open-my nails are so short I don't think they can handle it

I've got one and just don't get on with it! They're quite tricky to use so I usually end up asking OH to do it for me.

My beloved made me a special metal wedge to do that with, but then he's a wood & metal turner, so I'm privileged beyond all expectation! (I have an ebony rubdown stick, too!)

Before that, I used a small flathead screwdriver, or a nailfile...

                hi

I actually use a teeny pair of very sharp sewing scissors to kind of 'snip' into the split ring where it ends, then I turn the scissors so the blades are sideways on, to open up the split ring. I then thread on whatever I need, then remove the scissor blades.
                It works for me!
