  • Help needed with website

    Hi I need some help
My website has been up and running for some time now and on average it is getting 200 hits per day, I must be doing something right. But these hits are not turning into purchases. I would really appreciate it if you would have a look and tell me what is wrong with my site, please be honest.

hits mean nothing. Look to see how many unique users you are getting and try to convert them to sales.

If one person looks at your site it could register as anyting from around 30 hits up. It depends how much is on your site and what they look at.

200 hits is not 200 different people.

Building up conversion rate (or improving it) is one of the hardest aspects of eCommerce A lot of people quote the "industry" standard conversion rate as being ~3% (e.g. 3 sales per 100 visitors), however, I have said before and repeat - unconvinced thats a realistic average, or that it applies well to art/crafts.

Do you have any additional information in the logs from your system - e.g. where in the process customers abandon you? Are they bailing out with stuff in the basket, at checkout? Are they never adding things?

If you can build this sort of picture (even as a pie chart or similar sketch), it might help you to start building an understanding of which elements in the site might be putting people off!

                  Hi,

Is your site phoenixjewellery.com ? If it is, you don't have any prices for your jewellery, or at least if they were there, they weren't obvious. I'm also a bit put off by sites which don't go immediately to the jewellery and I have to click on something first. Unless I know I'm going to like what I see, I usually give up and go on to something else.

I don't get a huge number of sales from my own site, say one a week, but it's a good tool to show galleries and craft fair customers what I have to offer.

                  Hope that helps.

Yeah Im not sure about the moving thing on the top either, also and this is just my opinion, you sell so many different things it would put me off, there is no theme to it, in that it is a jewellery site, or a baby clothes site or wedding dress site? I would tend to feel that you could (I'm sure you are not but just from a customer point of view) be a Jack of all trades and a master of none.

The other thing I have found with my site is that if you have told family and friends about it, then often it is them looking, not real customers! My mum shows my site off to people, which is nice but yet to generate a sale from her!

Renata - Don't mean to be too forthright but I find you site just confusing, it looks like a business site and tabs for legal stuff but then pics of jewellery and no descriptions or prices, I really like one of your bits a pendant I think it is, but I can't see how to buy it.

Sorry I seem very negative in this post but I know I would love "real" feedback on my site, not just platitudes. So trying to be helpful not nasty!

so thats not hits then. 200 unique users a day, thats very good for a new site. Are you advertising? This is a massive amount of unique users for a new site.

                          Website statistics

The other thing that might be happening is that you have a web crawler / spider exploring your site.

I found that with one of mine, that I had a spider from somewhere going in and visiting the first page.
                          Take care

Just a thought, but which stats package are you using for your visiotr counts etc, just that some count page loads as unique visitors at first glance, but 1 visitor could count as several page loads.

For example, the site I use will show on my summary for example Today = 30 visitors. When I click into the analysis that is 30 page visits, which may have been from only 3 or 4 IP addresses, i.e. 3 or 4 visitors have looked at 10 pages each. A further clue is how long they stay on your site, visits of less than 3 seconds are often search bots so I've been told.

If not, and it genuinely is 200 unique visitors (not page loads or search engine bots) - share your secret, I for one would love to attract that much traffic

Ah sorry, I've found it now. I couldn't really say why you don't get sales. I suppose there are so many million jewellery sites out there, it's a wonder any of us gets any sales. I didn't find the moving words too annoying, at least it caught my attention. Maybe you could keep all the images the same size as that would look more professional. On a website, images are the most important thing. Professional images have definitely made all the difference to my business. I get a lot of enquiries from galleries, magazines etc because my images are clear.
