  • Toggle Clasps and Extender Chains

Hi, I am getting married on 29th December and want to make the necklaces for my flower girls to wear. I wanted to add an extender chain to these so that they can still wear them as they grow (they are currently aged 6 and 8). Can I use toggle clasps and put extender chains on these? Any help would be gratefully received as I am quite new to jewellery making!! Thanks so much!!

I don't think you can, because extender chains are basically an extension of the loop into which the clasp is attached. you would usually use them with lobster clasps.

      Toggle Clasps and Extender Chains

Thanks for your quick response!! That's what I thought but have just come across a US website where they are selling extenders that they claim you can use with toggle clasps. Don't want to waste the money getting one if they don't work! Even if I did get one not sure how I would attach it?

If they are selling them to be used with a toggle clasp, then I guess they'll be large looped chain. They might be too chunky for little flower girls. You need to be very careful to make sure the toggle you use is the right size as the science in toggle clasps is that the toggle must be so much wider than the loop.

I too would have said you'd need to use some kind of trigger catch with an extender but maybe there is something out there that's suitable to use with a toggle. I'd be interested in seeing it - as a newby you can't post links but you could PM me with the site and I could post it for you.

One other thing to consider - its a bit late to be ordering from America if you need them for the end of this month - last year I had 5 orders with various companies that I placed during November and only one of them arrived in time for christmas! Orders usually take around 7-10 days to get here but at this time of the year, its anyone's guess how long they will take.

Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage (its my anniversary on 30th).

You can get extender chains in Sterling Silver , Silver Plated and Gold Plated.

These have largish links and are usually used with lobster clasps. So that the lobster clasp can be clipped onto any of the links making the necklace longer or shorter

With a toggle, I imagine the links would have to be very large. I haven't actually seen one like this before... intriguing
