They can be used in the same way as jump rings but are a bit more bulky so don't look good with some designs.
They are an easy way of attaching charms to bracelets or using to link portions of a necklace or bracelet. They can be used at the ends of a necklace or bracelet to attach the clasp - the 'tigertail' or wire is less likely to slip through the gap like with jump rings.
You can also use them to attach charms to bag or mobile phone dangles.

I use split rings to attach the wire or chain to the clasp, especially on charm bracelets as if they're heavy and you use a normal jump ring, there is more chance of a jump ring coming undone. But like Silvermaid has said, they don't look right in all designs.

It also gives you more piece of mind that you have secured the clasp properly and it won't come undone.

thanks ladies. I feel like a bit of an arse because i went to use them last night thinking they were jump rings and i thought that the ebay seller had sold me bum rings! So, i proceeded to email the seller advising them of my problem. And then i realised the listing said SPLIT RINGS! So then had to email her back to say sorry

Hi Snow - If you have bought a load of them it might be worth investing in a pair of split ring tweezers (cheaper than split ring pliers), I bought some and they really save your nails ! (and less swearing once you get used to them)

don't feel stupid! i did exactly the same one..or maybe we both have to feel stupid haha
but they did come in handy at the end of chains for the clasps to hook onto etc
and also they were easy to snip with small jewellery pliers and turn into jump rings
              xx

They are used instead of jump rings for items that need to be closed securely
but can't be soldered ( or for people who don't solder). DON'T COMPLAIN THEY COST MORE THAN JUMP RINGS
