  • Newbie - Jewellery course

    Hi everyone

My hubby bought me a voucher for a jewellery making full day course and iv booked it for next week. So excited ! So, iv been looking at different beads (just cause i cant wait to buy stuff) and im a bit confused about how the size of the bead is calculated. So when its say, an 8mm bead.... would you measure that by laying a measuring tape down, sitting the bead on it and if its the thickness of 8mm, then thats the size? or do they measure round the bead from hole to hole ? Sorry, i know this is probably a really daft question but the size is hard to judge when looking at a picture on the net. I wish there was a bead shop somewhere near me ! Anyone fancy opening one in Glasgow????

Bead size is measured as a straight line from one hole to the other. Not the roundness of the bead. Basically you are talking about how much threading wire the bead would take.

When you see a measurement eg 25mm x 13mm the 25mm is from hole to hole. The 13mm is the side to side measurement.

That's great. I've not heard of it before, but I always teach one to one or a couple of friends at a time. It means that the teacher can constantly assess you and assist you with weaknesses and basically tailor the tuition to your needs.
Hope you realise just how adictive beading is!!!

I hope you enjoy the course, sounds like you are very excited about it! You may end up addicted to a new hobby afterwards.

How could you tell i was excited ?!?!?!?! he he

Well, iv always been into jewellery in a big way. Mostly rings though. Iv got about 40 at the minute ! All siver, handmade, with big chunky stones. Love them! Id love to try silversmithery as well but i think beads might be the best start. (Plus iv no idea if theres anywhere close that does courses on silversmithery)

Good luck with your course - I know you'll enjoy it.

And as Si mentioned, prepare to become addicted not only to beading but also to the forum.

I've been on her workshop and loved it!!!! If you look on my site on the 'Bespoke Jewellery' page, the blue bracelet on there is one I made that day. It was August last year. Claire is absolutely lovely and I do love her work.

You'll have a great time and please come and show us what you've made.

About bead sizes, it took me ages and ages to get the sizes right.

I went to one of her workshops August last year and absolutely LOVED it!!! Claire is lovely and you'll have a great day. The bracelet on this page is what I made on the day. I left feeling incredibly inspired. Is Claire going to come to your house? Or one of her assistants? Hope you get Claire, she's fab.

As far as bead sizes are concerned, I've been making jewellery for about a year & a half now and I've only just got used to what size beads to buy for what project. It takes a while but bbd's comment is very useful Thanks for that!

Have a great day on the course. You'll love it!

Do hope you enjoy your course. Silversmithing is the way to go to make your own rings and set stones but making jewellery with beads is a good way to start.

And I'm soooooooooo envious of your Nissan Figaro! I loooove them!

Babushka - That bangle is really beautiful! Had you had some experience before the course?
Im not sure who's coming to the house. I live near Glasgow so i doubt it will be Claire herself. I would think she would deal with the London courses. Im really excited about the 1 to 1 training but at the same time a bit nervous about some random person coming to my house from 11am - 5pm. It a long time to make conversation with a stranger

Shinysilver - Oh, i love my Figaro too! She's called Poppet. I'll try to post a picture but not sure how to do it on here????
