  • Freecycle??

    Hi,

I don`t if this helps anyone. Perhaps most people are already familiar with it.

I`ve been a member of my local freecycle group for a couple of years, mainly to clear my loft. Frequently people post unwanted craft items such as fabric bought for an abandoned project or perhaps they have taken up a craft and haven`t enjoyed it, even sewinand knitting machines. I co-ordinate a premature baby garment charity and frequently I`m offered yarn from members of my local freecycle.

It`s great way to declutter and make sure your unwanted stuff doesn`t go into landfill.

Anyway, the address is www.freecycle.org.uk from there you should able to register with your local group.

I wouldn`t recommend it to people who are a little more sensitve to rude people! Sadly, there are a few people in my local group who are a bit rude and in just for free stuff. I just delete the messages but the minority can ruin it for the majority!!

Where is your local one clare? How does it work?
I've looked at that website before and it seems very confusing! I couldn't find anything about my area??

Glad that it might be useful.

Sam, we have a strong group in Lich itself. There are several of us even in the same postcode.

I`m not sure where in Leicestershire you live but this is the link to the Leicester group which is HUGE!

I agree great idea. It's funny in my experience the people I've had things from (one a fab old singer sewing machine) were just lovely. The majority of people who've agreed to pick up things from me, have not turned up, been unreliable etc etc. Like you say if you ignore the rude ones (as in life it's a fab idea.

I use our freecycle quite a bit and have got many great things from there including a massive stash of quilting fabric, knitting patterns for my envelopes and keyboards for the keys (to use in jewellery)
It's fab but I do agree about the rude people but saying that you get rude people everywhere!

Thanks clare : ) I've joined, but I'm still not really sure what to do ... having one of those days! Plus the website keeps playing up so I might take another look tomorrow.

I think my fave response is "I`ll take this off your hands" or even just a "when can I collect this item" ho hum thats people for you.

However, most people are really great. It doesn`t take long for the word to spread about the rude ones. Liek this forum, the moderators work hard to make it a happy place for everyone.

Some people have had issues with Yahoo today so maybe that`s the problem???

Let me know if you`re still stuck.

I haven't actually recieved anything from my freecycle yet but I have put a few things on there that have gone to unrude and grateful people! It's a great idea despite the gits that keep posting WANTED posts for things like .... plasma tv's, pine bedroom suites ..............I kid you not!

Redmaxi is not kidding! I can't believe the things that people dare to ask for!
Have been using our local F'cycle to re-home some of our unwanted things and it has generally been a good experience.

I think our group are pretty reasonable as the mods run a tight ship. Bless them, they must have the patience of a saint.

On another local group people have asked for laptops and once even a car! Not a Mot failure etc to do up but a running motor with tax & test

I've seen that on ours too!! I tend to give stuff away to the charity shop at the moment. I gave away a pram with car seat etc to someone who obviously had no intention of keeping it and was going to sell it on. I'd rather our local charity shop (the fabulously named Only Foals and Horses!) got the money.
