  • Hello forum some advise please

Dear forum I am very new only minutes old but I just wondered if anyone could help me with some fabric related info my grandmother collected fabrics for many years you can imagine how beautiful they are I was hoping to incorporate some of these into my work..... so in effect mixing old and new fabric to create something splendid !! I hope .....I have several ideas that I am thinking about at present and my friends love my gifts I have made but if in the future I decided to work with antique vintage fabrics as a business are there any laws or rules, also if you are using old remnants acquired say at a boot fair how do you account for these without a paper reciept..... sorry if I appear naive it's because this is quite new. Welcome Lidia. How I envey you. I love old fabrics, in fact there are one or two of us here that do. I am a quilter and thats what I would use them for. You will get lots more suggestions though.

God helps them that help themselves.

Quilts sprung to mind here too! I inherited my sisters fabric she had collected over the years, but cannot use any of it for what I do (soft toys) due to the legislation surrounding Toy Safety. At some point, when I feel more experienced (only been sewing since last Aug) I may use it for quilts too.

And welcome to the forum :-)

Thank you Liz for the welcome I wish you so much with your lovely toys...... I am just a little confused on using antique vintage fabric I know there can be problems using modern prints that are copyrighted by designers etc but old fabrics are there any restrictions and legalities I just can't find any info on the internet. xxx Lydia

I so love how you describe yourself as only minutes old. It makes me chuckle and think of a new baby with a laptop!!

Anyway - welcome to the forum.

If your fabrics aren't designer fabrics then I don't think you'll have a copyright issue. Even if you are, I think it's unlikely anyone is going to be worried about you using their fabrics from a long time ago, although you would need to be careful how you worded your products if you want to mention designer names (e.g. bag made from XYZ fabric, rather than XYZ bag).

As far as keeping paperwork goes, just write down what you have spent, acquire receipts if possible but sometimes at boot sales that won't be possible and that will be understood. Just keep your records as accurately as you can.

I love the idea of using antique fabrics and can't wait to see some of our work!

Just be a little bit careful with older fabric . . .I once made a fabulous dress and washed it.... it fell to bits ! where the sun had caught it, it shredded.

so maybe test it out !

good luck, there are some fabulous pieces to be found.
If you dont have a go ................... you will never know
