  • Kirstie's Handmade Britain

Not seen a thread on this yet - did anyone watch?

I've just sat down to watch it (recorded it, there's only so much my OH will take lol)...have to say that so far I'm just so disappointed!!! The title is Kirstie's HANDMADE Britain and within the first 10 minutes I'm drowing in the word 'Craft' and all I can see is old ladies in craft tents!!!

Kirstie's got the best opportunities to educate people on what handmade is - it's not old ladies in tents, it's people of all ages and it's quality and it's fashionable, but I'm feeling like it's going to be an opportunity wasted (again) ... for me it's bringing back that debate regarding the difference between 'homemade' and 'handmade', and I think she's got it wrong

Have to say that as it's gone on I'm pleased to see some less stereotypical 'crafters' - got a baking competition being entered by a young girl and a guy who's a biker - but could it be a little late in the programme? If the opening credits are as I described above then surely a lot of people will be put off?!

I hope that the next episodes are more inclined towards the 'Crafts' side rather than cooking as they already have the great british baking and loads of other cooking series already. I would love to see more crafty things.

I think this week is paper crafts. I quite enjoyed her "Homemade Home" show, there were some lovely pieces made on that, especially the stained glass and gold leaf designs.

The pieces she comes up with are fabulous, I just get so frustrated when she's dealing with "talented artisans" and then describes the product (which we're trying to sell at handmade prices!) as 'craft' !

I have to admit to being a bit unsure of definitions and often find they are constantly being challenged and re-interpreted. I studied Fine Art so have more of a perspective on the 'Art' debate than the 'craft' one, but I know that there has been a drive in recent years to challenge the definition of 'craft' and hold exhibitions showing the skill and ideas that go into it.

I'm hoping that episode two will be better than the first. I have to agree, there are plenty of baking shows on the TV and Kirsty's opening programme wasn't what I expected. I really enjoyed her Homemade Home and Christmas programmes. And I think I'll reserve judgement as to whether I like to concept of visiting county shows to investigate "crafts".

I only saw bits of the episode but the bits I saw didn't seem to show what handmade means to us today. It seemed more like the old fashioned, homemade, stuff made by your granny style of handmade was being shown. The trailers for the show say she is making things to win competitions, so unless she finds some competitions that encourage the handmade rather than the homemade, I'm not hopeful about this program boosting the handmade world.

Completely agree (unfortunately!) The series is about Kirstie entering competitions at county shows - don't get me wrong, there are some seriously talented people entering these contents, but I don't think any of those people would decribe what they do as "professionally handmade", I think they'd be the first to admit their stuff is homemade, regardless of how good it is.
