  • Do things always happen in 3's?

Well I’ve decided I’m going to wrap myself in cotton wool for the time being.

It’s been a pretty rubbish summer overall. My 5 year old nephew fell off his bike about 5 weeks ago, fracturing his femur (thigh bone) in two places. He spent the best part of three weeks in hospital in traction and celebrated his 6th birthday whilst there. He was finally discharged home in bilateral leg plasters which go up to his waist, so he is wheelchair dependent and can’t walk. He’s doing O.K, but it’s been a tough few months for all the family, visiting and ferrying people to and from hospital etc., not to mention my sister in law who didn’t see outside the hospital walls for all that time, but he finally came home last week so things have been a bit easier.

That was until last night when my father in law slipped down a couple of steps and has broken his hip and his shoulder! We don’t know too many details just yet. They were hoping to take him to theatre this afternoon, but his breathing isn’t brilliant, so they’re monitoring him at the moment. He’s not in the best of health anyway – diabetic, hypertensive, heart disease etc, etc.

So I’m asking for lots of crossed fingers please that he makes a speedy recovery, and I’m taking extra care that I’m not going to be the third victim of a broken bone!

When I first read your question I was going to reply 'No they sometimes come in 4's or even 5's' but after reading everything that has happened a joke is not appropriate. So I'm sending my sympathies instead and I'm keeping my fingers crossed both for you and your FiL.

Take care and keep us posted on how things are going.

That sounds like an awful few months. Keeping my fingers crossed that there isn't a 3rd thing! Hope both your nephew and father in law recover soon!

Oh no! What a dreadful time you are having. Sending hugs and best wishes to all concerned and hoping that everything and everyone is soon much happier and on the way to recovery.

Thanks everyone. My FiL went to theatre yesterday afternoon and had his hip pinned, not replaced. He's doing O.K and will hopefully start mobilising soon. He's not the most patient of patients! I think over the last few months we've all seen too much of the inside of hospitals and he just wants to get home again.

On a more positive note, Will (my nephew) went to school yesterday in his wheelchair and was star of the show. Thankfully his teachers/school were happy to accommodate him, so at least he's getting out and about and seeing his friends. First days back at school are so important to this kids and I'm glad he was able to do that.

As for my original question as to whether things happen in 3's, I going to count Wills' fracture and one, and my FiL's as the other two, being as he fractured both his shoulder and hip!

            Thanks again everyone.

So sorry to hear about your family's accidents - how awful! Wishing everyone a speedy and full recovery.

It is true that things tend to go in threes and I think you might be cheating to count one accident as two!! So, just to be on the safe side, go and do what my Dad always used to do and snap a matchstick in half - that is the third break and you will be fine!

I've not heard that one before, but consider it duly done!
