  • Anyone else had a messege from Vogue?

I been invited to buy space in an "advertorial" feature called "Arm Candy"
    Prices from £270!!
I would be excited like I was last year when they asked me, however having spoken to a few crafters who have taken up the offer I'm quite happy to accept the compliment and move on!!!
(unless anyone wants to convince me otherwise )
    Happy Crafting!

Good decision LOL The first time I was offered a jewellery one I was so chuffed, then I had a word with our PR and Advertising guys in work and got a reality check. They said........................

    1. Only do it if you can afford to lose the money because you will never see that amount of profit back from it to cover your costs.

    2. The special offer is rubbish. If they can afford to offer that price today they can tomorrow, next week or next month.

    3. If you must, try and negoiate a further discount, they do have room for manover as they are trying to fill the spaces very close to print date and they would rather have some money than an empty space.

I only know of one person who sold anything as a direct result of this ad and I don't think one necklace @ £50 counts as making a £270 profit !!!

Wait for the FREE magazine and newspaper features to come along Claire (which they will for your lovely bags) as they are much more profitable. There is no way that I would ever pay to give a magazine or newspaper the privilege of showing off my work

If they're that desperate to feature your craft work surely they'd do an article? I'm assuming this is the marketing people trying to meet their targets.

I totally agree with this. Unfortunately you have to be cynical in this world and ask 'what's in it for them?' (a nice bit of revenue) 'what's in it for you?' - exposure of your work, admittedly a nice feeling to be up there in a quality mag, but a hefty amount on the expenses side of your accounts. At the end of the day will it help to pay the mortgage?

Your work stands up for itself Claire, your bags are unique and beautiful. You'd do better to write a feature about yourself and hawk it around as many different places as possible and they might pay you!

            Yep, I agree.

'Advertorial' indeed, I hate that word. Why can't they just feature people on their usual editorial pages or sell them advertising space as normal? Why try to dress it up? I get the same sort of email from Red and from one of the sunday papers [can't recall which one, shows how much notice I take], always dressed up as 'an amazing opportunity' for me. Opportunity to line their coffers maybe. I think Kate has the right idea; write your own copy & send it to all the mags with some pictures.

I just wanted to bring this up for discussion again.

I've just been approached, and no doubt others will be in the run up to Christmas.

I was trying hard to keep my feet on the ground, but they did seem to have a slightly floating feeling - even when I did my calculations about how often I react following an article in a magazine.

I took a punt on £120 a few months ago, and it paid off, not made a profit, but paid for itself, I guess it is like gambling I'm looking for a bigger thrill!! Thank you craft forum for bringing me back to earth.

It seems the emails are starting up again - this time it's for the Sunday papers, an absolute bargain at only £450. I just delete them right away.
