  • A Mondrian moment

About 3 weeks ago I was thinking about making a Mondrian inspired necklace, he's the guy that did a black grid on white background and coloured sections in with bold colour.
I thought its a simple idea, mostly white beads with black and key colours added.
I eventually realised that I thought it would be hideous and nobody would buy it.

Fast forward to last week.Im looking through a magazine and low and behold, a model is wearing a pair of Mondrian shoes!!Also a jacket i think.

    Unbelievable.
Despite this matching of fashion minds Im not going to make the necklace as I dont like it.

Anybody else have this happen to them?

    Hey Seahorse

Check you out with your finger spot on the fashion pulse!!

I studied industrial design at uni and one day came up with the most amazing and innovative idea. Wont go into it as it is a long story... but, with my tutors help that afternoon we contacted the patent office only to find out that someone else had filed an application for the same idea on the other side of the world a few hours previously!!! My only conciliation is that they must have been thinking and working on it for a while as their application was quite detailed - never the less.... i was gutted!

I spent an hour last night drawing an 'original' design for a necklace, very intricate, very (for me) difficult - found it on Laura McCabe's site as a kit! Bugger.

There is no point making something you don't like. I think most your customers will probably have similar taste to you and hence why they like your work! You are probably just saving yourself time!

            BTW - happy birthday ;-)

                It does me!
I personally don't like green. It doesn't suit me and I don't wear it.

I find it really hard making any jewellery in green because whatever I make I think "ugh, don't like that" but I've learnt to just ignore my own opinion! I find green is popular and people often comment that I haven't got much of it (I wonder why?!)

We must buy the same magazines cos I saw that too!! It's in my pile of pages to make an envelope out of!!

I once had my version of a mondrian on one of my classroom windows - took me bl**dy ages to do and all the kids said was 'why is that on the window miss' - little buggers! It was good in a way though cos it stopped the parents peering through the window, waving at their kids as I was trying to tell them important stuff at hometime!

It's funny how ideas seem to pop up all over the place at roughly the same time. I made a lovely crystal, bead and silver necklace recently that I was really proud of, and then was told by a friend that her sister-in-law was wearing one 'exactly the same' at a party a couple of weeks previously, and had I sold it to her? Of course I had not, but where in the ether did that idea come from? I would have sworn it was original out of my own head. Well, they say there is nothing new.......

Greens not normally a colour Id go for tho I have bought some clothes in green in recent years, also working with green beads at the mo, trying to make the piece peacockesque.

                          Sell the idea on.

I know of a jewellery vendor in New York who has no taste that might be interested?
