  • Spelling Howler!

A new antiques shop just opened in our village on the Suffolk Broads. It looks lovely, great paint job on the outside, the windows full of enticing lovely items, big handpainted signs on both of the enormous shopfront windows, that say:

    BROADS ATIQUES

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Oh dear.

That sound like one of those "open all hours" moments where Granville realise that the sign on the window is wrong ! :-) I am sure someone will have pointed it out to them :-)

Ah but have you thought it could be a ploy to get peeps through the door telling them about it then trying to sell them something ???

I agree sherrielinda , my boss in the bank used to put important signs at an angle and whenever anyone mentioned they were wonky he used to say ' yes, but have you read what it says '

I remember seeing freshly painted road markings in Brighton saying STPO instead of STOP...

Still at least they aren't permanent signs - well from how you describe them they don't sound like they are - how annoyed would you be if they were!

I have to be honest, one of my pet hates is incorrect spelling. It never ceases to amaze me how many notices, signs and flyers (amongst others) I have read which have incorrect spelling on them.

Surely, if what you are writing is going to be seen by loads of people (such as leaflets, signs etc) you should at least make sure the wording is correct.

                Sorry - rant over!

I know what you mean about flyers and things with bad spelling/punctuation - but lots of people do have problems with spelling. I'm sure my other half would do the same!

I guess you get some poor guy who draws straight lines for a living...then suddenly he is expected to spell something...

Duh! Some people should just not be allowed to write notices.

Oops, as said before bet they get noticed.

I too hate incorrect spelling must admit am guilty at times and also what is with the small i in sentences, the Oxford Dictionary clearly states it should be a capital, I hate to see this in website text as looks childish and not very professional and could be damaging to the seller, think it all stems from texting which makes one lazy using shortened abbreviated words but as a business, has to be right both spelling and grammar.

Couldn't stop giggling when I read that. Just imagine the face of the owner. Must have been a proper - 'Errrrr, ok.... ummmmmm, yeah' moment. Still giggling now!

Like many of you, I'm a real stickler for spelling and grammar - that's why the windows hit me in the eye as I drove past!

I used to drive past a hotel that had a cafe - they used to have a sandwich board outside that advertised "TEA'S AND COFFEE'S".

And a beauty parlour that offered "SUGERING".

It was so hard for me to not go in and put them right.

Sadly, these kind of dreadful errors seem to be in the majority of signs these days.
