  • My brand new website

Well i have finally finished it, its been a long process my typing skills are limited to two fingers! It maybe a bit basic to all of you fellow crafters and no doubt still needs lots of tweaking to get it right, but lots of tears, tantrams and plenty of laughs have gone into it!
    Please be kind!

Firstly, congratulations at getting your website up and running - that is no mean feat in itself! My first instant reaction was that the colours were too garish but I have to say they kind of grew on me as I went on.

There is, however, a few major issues in my opinion:

    1. Visitors can only view your site through a very narrow 'letterbox-style' window. It was only because I wanted to have a look around for you that I persevered. Scrolling down a page to see more is OK but not if you can only see an area which is smaller than the banner which only contains your company name. You really need to get that sorted out straight away as I cannot see anyone sticking with your site as it is now - if you click on a product, the photograph is larger than the space you have to look at it so you can't see the whole image.

    2. Whilst the pink writing fits in with your general colour scheme, it is restrictive for anyone with visual difficulties. It is quite difficult and harsh on the eye to read standard text in bright pink.

    3. You need to have your address and contact number/e-mail address on the site to comply with Distance Selling Regulations. You also need to list your Returns Policy including a statutory 'cooling off' period. There are lots of posts on here about this or you can get more details from the Office of Fair Trading website (look under Distance Selling Regulations). It is compulsory for any company selling online.

It is difficult for me to make too many comments regarding page layout, ease of use, etc as it isn't easy to see everything with the small window. I did look at your 'About Us' and 'Terms & Conditions' pages and they don't appear to be complete as they both consist of a paragraph each. I would expand on these pages and ensure that you have everything included that you need to.

Good luck with your site - the promotion and advertising part is hard work too, so you still have some mountains to climb! (I think that part is never-ending to be honest!!)

You do seem to have managed pretty well on two-finger typing!!

I think Alicat has given you some great pointers there and I don't really have much to add!

I actually like the colours, very cute and girly However, as a consumer, the small window or 'iframe' would drive me potty and i wouldn't stick around long enough to buy anything! I would definately try and get that fixed if you can! I think I once read somewhere that people hate to scroll so it could potentially lose you customers!

Well done though on a great first job! Getting a website up and running is indeed a long and ardious task, I am still doing mine and it's driving me insane lol!

Have to say I agree with the small viewing window and having to constantly scroll down to read info/see pics etc. Sorry!

On the whole though it's a fab and fun site, really bright and colourful and I LOVE your products! Great work!

Have you sorted out the narrow 'letter box' style window as I don't have this problem? You still have to scroll to a small degree but nothing that would put me off, I can also view all your enlarged images fully.

Agree the about me stuff needs expanding, here is where you can really sell your skills and create buyers confidence in your ability.

I'm viewing it on Chrome if that makes any difference.

Just curious, have you had any issues regarding copyright relating to some of the items you make (like the little Ben & Jerry's tubs)? I only ask as so many "big" firms are so protective of their brands, and I've been advised to stay away from anything which might get me tangled up with copyright!!!

Never had any issues as yet, i do state that manufacturers do not endorse my items they are only my interpretation, i have been moving away from the branded makes though.

Websites are a lot of sweat and tears, you got it up and running so well done, thats the first hurdle, you will tweek it lots over the next while like I dd to mine. The wee window is odd, its only showing about 2 inches of your products at a time, I looked at the little beads in the jar pendant and couldn't see all of it and I agree with earlier comments about the colours they don't add anything to your products which are so bright and cheerful. If you make the background plainer and cooler the colours of the work will shine. Give yourself a pat on the back though for getting this far.
