  • Pricing for a Christening gown

I have been asked by my neighbour to make a christening gown for her little girl - so honoured! She would like it made from silk and I have seen some on the Fabricland website for £7.99 per metre, £13.99 per metre and £25 per metre so clearly the final price will depend very much on her fabric preference. My question is this this will take me about 12 hours to make start to finish what would be the maximum you would pay for a handmade (I want to say couture but it sound so pretentious!) christening outfit?

I don't really know how much christening dresses are, none of my children have been done
    Could you search on google?
As far as the fabric goes, i have made a few posh dresses and it's so hard to tell what the quality of material is on the internet. i know you parhaps want to save money on it, but it makes such a huge difference on something like that. i would recommend going somewhere where you can see and feel what you are buying, such as John Lewis or any other fabric place you may have near you. you could keep costs down by doing the bodice in a dearer fabric ( maybe embroiderd or sequined or something) and then the skirt in another.
I'm sure you know all this stuff, after all your the dress maker...I'll shut up now

Thanks Lisa, I have ordered a few samples from Fabricland so I can see it in the flesh as you quite correctly point out it is important to see the quality before you invest. Unfortunately we are a bit out in the sticks here, the nearest decent fabric stores are about 35 miles away which is fine when I'm left to shop but less fun with the kids in tow! With hubby away such alot at the moment I am really stuck so I tend to shop alot online for convenience but it is frustrating having to wait for samples all the time.

I've just had a quick google and prices for handmade christening gowns range from £80 to £300 depending on the quality of silk and amount of decoration.

Have you asked your neighbour what price range she's thinking of?

Thanks Elaine, I've got a meeting with her on Sunday evening so am just doing a bit of research for that. I do intend to ask her first how much she wants to spend rather than suggesting a price but I wanted to guage opinion here first to see what would be a reasonable amount.
