  • Working out prices...

I thought this would be the fun part, working out how much you spent on each item to then find an selling price but its one of those wobbly bonkers in my head things again.
Some are quite easy but others, I have to work out, did I get such and such in a deal?did that site charge VAT?do I add a charge for P+P that I had to pay?etc

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I know it has to be done, its just a long dull job.Il have to wade through my invoices and make decisions.
I shall be more organised in the future and make a note of things as I order them and how many Im actually gona use.

I just had to vent about my latest annoyance.Ignore me if you wish.

    Prices

I have only been doing this for a month but have been keeping a record of what I have spent since I started. That way I can work out how much each item costs to make, to then work out how much to charge. I always include postage but not things like petrol, as I try and buy supplies when I am already out (food shopping or something!).

I find it easier to keep a record as I go, otherwise I would forget or have bits of paper everywhere. It is a pain but worth doing I think .

Hehe, I have my invoices all neatly filed but I also have pieces of paper flying about!!
when I look at the invoices, its just all numbers and colour names!!Too much for my tiny brain to compute!!!!

Your right, its definately worth doing, I just have to keep on the ball while im making something and not leave it til Im working on another project.

Grrrr, as Im going through my pieces to see what I used in them, I looked closely at one and the glass bead was chipped!!!
Good for me coz it means I can keep and wear it but so annoying as Im gona have to buy beads to do another one and Im having a 'guilty' time re money again.

How do you store your pieces?

          Storage

I don't make jewellery but my mosaic tiles are also very fragile - I keep each colour in storage boxes ( some are the ones you get from the chinese!). I also keep the bubblewrap the tiles are sent in and use that to protect my mirrors.

The general principle with pricing things if you are doing it to make a profit, is "whatever the market will stand". Obviously, if this figure is lower than your costs and the value of your time, there is not much point you doing it. Clearly you can go for break-even or marginal if other factors matter more to you such as personal satisfaction etc.

Market demand is based on a number of factors, the most fun one being the "personal taste" aspect which means if someone falls in love with your work, the price is pretty open.

I guess key considerations would be:
            • uniqueness
            • quality
            • perceived difficulty
            • perceived beauty
            • fitness for purpose (if appropriate)
            • competitive pricing

I am SO Useless at Pricing....

.......I think I've got things like aprons, bookbags etc fairly well worked out. But my Bunnies are always tricky, some use more fabric, some use less for outfits, but most of the fabrics are vintage. It can either be an absolute bargain buy [from a charity shop], or quite expensive [but it was exactly what I wanted, just the right colour and we won't mention the price tag to Himself....]

So, I've started working out a 'mean' price. Adding the total costs together for the bunnies I'm selling, and then dividing it by the number of bunnies. So all the bunnies are the same price, customers feel this is fair, and I'm covered too.

I can't put a price on my time though. Somethings I can just whizz through, but other things I'll spend hours fiddling with, just getting it to my satisfaction, even if both things are for instance, aprons. One might be giving me grief, the other really easy.

I just find pricing really hard, especially with the market to consider. What are customers prepared to pay etc. And at every craft fair there are always those who virtually sneer at stuff - you know they don't have the foggiest what effort and materials went into creating the article, but they look at your stall with blatant disgust at the prices. Those people always give my confidence a knock, and I start thinking perhaps the article isn't what folk want......until someone else happens by and they love it!

Getting a 'mean' rice is a good idea.I plan on doing that with boxes when I need to get them.

Dont let the so and so's knock your confidence, as you say, what one person doesnt like another person loves!

I havnt bothered to add my time in the price, I make some things at work so Im already being paid, plus I can make things whilst the TV is on in the background.Ive even been know to miss viewing any scene of Eastenders because Im so engrossed in what Im doing.
