Pewter jewelry: what do think about them?

Hi All,

I've been wearing pewter pendants for awhile, and have idea to open a store to sell them.

Now while I think the pewter pendants look cool, I'd like to know what other people thought about them. Did anyone have good/bad experience with them?

Have to admit Ive never knowingly worn anything pewter but 99% of the charms I have bought and liked have been pewter.

I have lots of pewter jewellery, and like them a lot. But you should label them as pewter, as some people are allergic to it...

I live in Thailand and pewter here are very good - no lead and nickel, etc. Tin is one of the top export goods here I think.

Some US/European friends I know says pewters they've brought locally are fragile and get tarnish overtime, is that the case?

yes being british pewter it has to be lead free by law, since the charter was draw up in 1474. so it would be safe. It looks lovely on pendants as alot can be done with it

I remember years ago at school (yes I can remember that far back) we made pewter badges in metalwork they were about 1 1/4 inch across (32mm in new measures) we cast them in fine casting sand, I remember melting the pewter in crucibles over a charcoal furnace as the melting temprature of pewter is lower than most other metals we could have worked with (about 580c) then pouring the molten metal into the casting box

I dont know anything about pewter but I always got the impression it was quite poor quality and bent easily? am I wrong? is this what they make cheaper jewellery out of like in places such as claire accesories and stuff?

I know when I get into 3rd yr at uni we have a pewter challange or something. Would be interesting to find out what exactly it is!

The Annie bit of me sells pewter badges -repro medieval pilgrim badges. They are usually kicking about in my basket for a year and get handled by children regularly. I can report back they stay pretty shiney and they don't bend. What does bend are the handles on some pewter spoons when my customers use the spoons as knives. (Does that need explaining? Forks didn't come to England until late into the C16th and were used by the rich for eating sweet(meats) without getting their fingers sticky.)

Hi Screech - that 1474 charter -is that so? That's very interesting. I'm not sure my gang (the Tudor 'lost and found' boys - my son and his mates who cast all sorts on the Kentwell foundry) know that. Was it enforced? What about imports? Did they have to comply?
