  • Will bails go rusty?

Would it be ok to use platinum bails without worrying about rust or discolouring? I don't really want to use sterling silver (although I'd prefer it) because I'm just experimenting, and cost is an issue. Also, which ones would be most suitable for a clay pendant with hole?

    Hiya Gail.

I don't think its platinum that you have - platinum is about 5 times the price of gold!

Whatever it is, it shouldn't rust but if its only a base metal then it will eventually tarnish - as does silver if its not cleaned now and again.

If you're only experimenting then by all means use the cheapest option you have and then once you're happy with your finished design, you can always splash out a bit and use the more expensive findings.

Lol....you're right - it's platinum plated! I don't have any yet, just been looking on ebay for now. Thanks for answering.

Platinum or rhodium does not tarnish and very often sterling silver will be rhodium plated, but with heavy wear items like rings or bracelets the plating can chip off.
I think they would be fine.
