  • My first candles!

    I've made 20 tealights...10 different wicks

Looking OK but the top looks squiggly, is that to much fragrance? Because if I'm being honest, my scales wouldn't measure small amounts (need to buy digital scales)

Will be burning 10 tomorrow to see which burns the longest.

I've discovered some things about myself:
    • I'm not very patient
    • I'm becoming obsessive (anal) about look, levels, scent etc
    • I need to improve fitness, because I seem to spend a silly amount of time squatting down to table level, squinting at tealights!

Final confession...realised when I checked my temperature that I had absolutely no idea what it should be (or more importantly what it shouldn't)

Yay on your first bath of tealights.
What do you mean squiggly? Are they soy and dyed? If so, might be frosting?
    Good luck with the burning

They are rapeseed with a tiny amount of dye (technical...need scales!)

I did another pour (3rd) on some and just checked and they haven't got squiggly effect on top. Could it be the temperature of the wax when I poured?

Welcome to the chandling club! I bet there's a fair few of us are obssesive/compulsive, impatient, unfit candle aficienados.

Fear not, Val. There's probably a wig forum here!

10.10 - all ten wicks trimmed and burning

Initial impression is the flame is bigger and more stable from the three beeswax wicks, but I suspect they wont be the longest burn. Also those three are the least attractive candles, as they were the last I poured and I think I rushed them.

11.10 - the beeswax wicks all completely melted wax and horrible mushrooming. Similarly the largest wicks are melting the wax quickly. The front runner appears to be TL18

12.10 - not the beeswax, used nearly all wax and really ugly, uneven flame with huge mushroom. Still looking good for TL18

I had the same problem with all beeswax tealights. i mixed 50/50 with stearin which was much better! I've not bothered to look at a long term solution yet. It's on my long list of things to do.

                            Ouch ......

I haven't had much luck with beeswax either, infact I have some to test so will see how they go and if the wick labels haven't fallen off I may even be able to record what I used ..... sigh ....

                            Decending into a wick depression

                            not good ....

16.40 - The winner is Rapeseed wax with TL28 a total of 6 hours 30 mins, the TL15 went out at 16.07, TL18 at 16.05

I'm tempted to remelt the leftover rubbish ones and re-wick with the top three and run the test again, but would do that tonight and leave till tomorrow to test, maybe be able to get the best to post office just before it shut for my entry in candle olympics!
