    Hi,

As I understand it a 'dipping vat' is a tall, usually iron/steel, container used for dipping taper candles. I believe you place in a double boiler type set up and fill with wax. The candle/wick is the continuously dipped until it is at the necessary size. You may be able to cool the taper in between each dip to cool the wax before adding more to the outside.

One of the traditional ways for making candles and often used in school experiments etc.
