  • I want to make books!

    Helloo,

Does anyone have any advice on how to start book-binding? I really want to start making my own books but don't really know where to start.

Does anyone know of any good books and online shops I can get the materials/equipment from?

    Thanking you.

    Hello Yvonne

Some colleges who offer adult education classes may perhaps run a book binding course. You would need to look on the internet at your local authority website or your county council website for details. Certainly my local college run both evening classes and Saturday courses for a whole variety of things including craft-related topics.

I also seem to remember that some years ago my uncle did a book binding course at West Dean College in West Sussex so it might be worth Googling them to find more details.

Hope this is of some help to you!

This might sound stupid but what kind of books do you want to bind? i have a bind-it-all which is great for making mini books, scrapbooks and even punches through CD's.

If it's to bind loads of pages then that wouldn't work as it would take to long, if you need a link give me a shout or just google bind it all (the manufacturer is zutter)

I recently bought a book about book binding from the US that looks fab (only had a quick flick) - it's upstairs though so I'll dig it out and let you know what it's called.

          Thanks everyone.

I have no idea really what kind of books I want to make yet.

I think I'll start with basic exercise book type ones. But I really like the ones where you can see the paper along the spine - so it's like 2 covers and paper strung together. Obviously I have no idea what i'm talking about...

Right sorry for the delay. It's called aptly enough 'How to make books' and it's by Esther K.Smith ISBN is 978-0-307-35336-8 Has big red writing on the front on plain cardboard - just in case you need a visual reference!

If you mean something more substantial - like a proper book.. take a look here.. not for the "easily led" though.. or your credit cards will be sorry!

I have looked at loads of stuff on this site, and it is all very easy to read/understand, plenty of free tutorials too..

You mean like this? It's called coptic stitch and it's the first one I've made, so not perfect.
