  • Tartan and Gingham Ribbon

Simple question. Is tartan ribbon and gingham ribbon the same or is there a specific difference? They both look checked or can they both be called the same thing or not?

Gingham, as you have stated is check as we know it but tartan is a sort of check in another way. Can I suggest you put tartan into the search engine and it will show you a sample hopefully. I really cant explain or describe tartan except to say it is checked in two or three colours with horizontal and virticle lines in those colours too.

As I am from Scotland I think I can answer this tartan and gingham are not the same. Gingham is a simple check of two alternating colours. Tartan is a specific style of checked pattern I have found this website that compares different checked pattern/types and shows the difference between tartan and gingham (oops take two) unfortunately I am unable to post it as Ive not posted enough. If you google your question you too should find the comparison of different checked patterns. I hope this helps.

        Hoots Mon!

If you imagine what a kilt looks like, they are normally made with tartan fabric. This involves squares of different sizes and colours, with lines of varying thickness criss-crossing. Gingham is regular squares of the same size.

        Hope this McHelps!

They are very different beasts.. gingham originallymade from cotton is usually two colours, with and equal number of each on the warp and weft which then bisect each other to create equally sized squares.

Tartan was originally made from wool, it can be squares, oblongs and rectangles often with contrasting stripes and can be from two colours upwards.

Gingham is only made up of one colour and not two. One line is a paler shade of the other. Traditionally tartan has up to 6 colours and the stripes are of varying sizes but as you said originally it is basically a check but usually far larger than the gingham check.

I dont think that`s right as i have gingham and they are all coloured and white. So definitely 2 colours. Tartan ribbon can have more colours.

Gingham is always white and one other colour in check. The orginal gingham material was also white and one other colour check but the material didn't have a smooth flat finish you don't see this material any more. Gingham now only refer to the use of white and one other colour in a check formation.

When your searching for such ribbon do you search for gingham ribbon or check ribbon. I`m sure there are plenty of people out there who dont know what gingham is.

Actually just to be difficult, classic gingham is white and a.n.other colour, however you can also get gingham in multiple colours
