  • How to dye paper

I'm experimenting with making my own paper, and have found a system that works for me.

However, one thing eludes me - how to dye my paper. I need something quick and easy (and preferably cheap). I've tried food colouring, but it doesn't work particularly well. So, does any one have any ideas?

    Many thanks

    Lenny.

You need to use a dye.

Most food colourants commonly available in supermarkets are merely temporay stains, many of them, especially the natural ones, being fugitive.

Natural dyes need chemical mordants to make them 'fast'; alternatively you might try Dylon - easy to get in the UK.

Best have a look at the internet's dyeing 'bible' - Paula Burch's site.

Ah yes, Paula Burch will put you right. It might be worth investing in some procion dyes.....they are mostly shown to dye things very vividly but using less dye results in some subtle shading too.
