How to trace onto fabric

I'm probably being a bit thick here but... How on earth do I trace an embroidery pattern onto fabric? There were some free button making thingiemabobs with Mollie Makes and I want to make them but I've never done any embroidery before and I don't understand how to get the pattern onto the fabric - all the instructions say is "trace it".

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it

Hi, an easy way to trace patterns is to use Bondaweb which is a like tracing paper with a sticky backing. You can then iron it onto your fabric and cut round. Another way is to trace onto Stitch and Tear then do the sewing with it on the back and finally rip off. Hope I'm not telling you something you already know.

if it's a light coloured fabric could you maybe also use carbon paper?

Tracing wheel and tailors chalk?

Bondaweb is good but it depends whether you want one side to have a sticky backing...............what you can do is rub the back of the pattern over with tailors chalk, remove dust, then place on fabric chalk side down and simply draw over the pattern with a pencil, the pressure will transfer the pattern and any excess can be rubbed off once you finish your stitching!

Find a good haberdashers and get an embroidery pen, its a water soluble ink that's blue and you can put your drawing on a light box, fabric over the top and draw round. Alternatively there is an iron-on fabric pencil that you can get from haberdashers too, you go over the lines on the reverse of your design and then using a hot iron you transfer the pattern to the fabric - be warned though, it doesn't work on all fabrics and sometimes there is a problem with getting rid of the marks.
