  • Soldering

Seahorse this is really for you! What do I need? How easy is it? Is there a technique to doing it? I will be soldering round bits of pottery - do you think the principles will be the same for soldering glass?
Anyone other than Seahorse can answer but I know she has experience of this!!
    Thanks in advance

    Ooh, I feel all special.

A very nice man on this forum called dhumphrysd helped me a heck of alot re soldering for which I will be eternally grateful for.He sent me bits Id need so I could see how it all works.

    You will need-
A soldering iron-I got a posh one for £80 which heats up really hot or you can get a basic one which takes longer to heat up but does the trick for about £8 from a DIY shop.
Make sure it has a stand with it so you can rest it while still hot
Also a heat mat to work on, again you can get them from a DIY shop.

Copper foil tape-This is like copper sellotape. It comes in different widths, around £5 a real, it lasts a long time tho depending on what you are using it on.They have differnt coloured backings so if you are working on glass and the back can be seen you can pick a backing colour that coordinates.
The back colours are copper, black and silver.

Solder-the metal you melt with the soldering iron. You can get different combinations. Some has lead in which I try to avoid.

Flux- a acidic liquid to put on the copper tape to clean any dirt from it and the solder will adhere to it.

Sponge-special heat resisitanr sponge to wipe the iron on

tip tinner-which helps with the solder adhereing(I think)

    Basically I think thats it.
I dont know how it would work on pottery tho.
Ive been soldering for ayear or so, sometimes it goes well, other times it doesnt. There are sites that give tips so have a read.

Id be very happy to send you some of the bits instead of you buying before you try.

Also have a look at www.creativeglassguild.co.uk I get my stuff from there, have a look under tools and materials.Im sure they are other sites but these people are very nice and helpful.

Doh, forgot to say to keep the copper foil in a air tight container or it will react with the air and go green!
