  • Witch hazel on Bath bomb labels??

    Hi everyone

I havent been putting witch hazel on my labels, do you think i need to.

According to the cosmetic regs it says
12 - 2 (b) (ii) The following shall not however be regarded as ingredients:
Subsidiary technical materials used in the preparation but not present in the final product

(Im not selling for a few weeks yet so have some time to sort this out)

    Hi, Donna
I've been struggling with this one too - I trawled a few websites and a couple of them do show Hamamelis Virginiana in their ingredients list (and presumably then, they put it on their labels).
And I thought I'd got it all sorted out !!

      Hi, Donna

I've just picked up my order from Amanda and she says that witch hazel must be included with the other ingredients on the labels; the reference you quote apparently refers to things like the caustic soda when making cold process soap - it is present but it combines with the oils to become soap, so you don't list sodium hydroxide as an ingredient.

      Hope this helps

      Hugs, Pam

I don't know this for sure....so sorry if I'm wrong, but, although the water in bath bombs evaporates (so doesn't need to be on the label) Witch Hazel is (I think) a Hydrolat - a by-product of making essential oils (it's the water left over from distilling the oils) so it probably contains small amounts of the essential oil or essence...I would think it does need to be declared because, although the water has evaporated, the witch hazel essence probably wouldn't...

I hope that makes sense...and with labelling I tend to err on the side of caution and include anything that may be present. I don't use witch hazel myself in my bath bombs but I have seen Hamamelis Virginiana declared on labels...
