  • Weights on labels???

    Hi everyone

Im getting very close to selling now and it is getting so exciting. I really want to be making lots and lots of lovely bath bombs but want to hold on so they are as fresh as possible when I do my first fete.

I have contacted my local Trading standards who are going to email me some info. One of the things she put in her email was

'can you give me some idea of how you are selling these items e.g. are you marking with weight/volume? if so how do you determine this?'

I said i was planning on displaying them loose and then putting in cellophane or paper bags when bought with labels for ingredients (including allergens), use for product, batch number, company details. I am aware that if you include weights you need to have professional scales which Im not keen to fork out for. I have reread the regulations and didnt see about putting weight on product...is it essential or is it one of those things that if it is included you need proper scales or if it is emitted you are ok?

    Donna

It all seems so hard sometimes when all i want to do is make bathbombs!!

Hi Donna...The weight being on the packaging isn't to do with the EU Cosmetics Directives...I forget which bit of the legislation it IS to do with but it is the law (probably some wieghts and mesures sales act or something)...

If you have a local post office (or a friendly green grocer or similar), you might be able to go in and ask nicely if they would let you borrow their scales ...take five to ten of your bombs (unpackaged) in and make a note of the weights. Inevitably handmade items will vary in weight...so the best thing to do is put a minimum weight - for instance....the lightest bomb is 150g and the heaviest bomb is 180g so you need to put
Min. Weight 150g on your labels - you can put Av. Weight 165g ...but it's risky, in terms of somone getting 2 or 3 bombs that all happen to be well under the 165g...they may feel cheated.

I have only ever had one person email me to say their bombs were under weight...I'd changed my mould and not thought to check the wieghts...

There is somewhere in the weights and measures act the ability to sell without a weight, you can sell as a one, like 1 cucumber, best to ask you TS for more info.

if product is unable to be packaged and wrapped, all you need to do is put the ingredients and approx weight near the bath bombs when you are selling them at the fair.

            Thank you all,

The trading standards lady has sent me various regulations, although they seem to relate more to food. She has been very lovely and is coming to visit me at home in 2 weeks time, if my head hasnt exploded by then!

Whilst I agree with you wholeheartedly, not to comply with the regs could end up with hefty fines:-(

I also think it is crazy that you can sell a cupcake or cream bun without a weight on it, but not a bath bomb - some of our TS regs are very controversial?

We regularly get TS officers at our stall, they buy a few items, take them back to their office and then send us a report - so it is best to follow the regs.

                    Thanks Jane

Dont get me started on the food things. My friend is selling cupcakes and all she had to do was buy a recipe book, get hygiene people around and off she goes!
I had a little smile when you said TS buy items from your stall then take them back to office....I wonder if they get to take them home after for a little bath :-)

Hi we don't sell bath bombs but the regs re soap (and I assume they're the same) are:

The weight can be at point of sale if the items are sold unwrapped
If you label them you must put weight on using a minimum of 10pt font size
You must use trading standard approved scales (and I agree the price of them is horrendous)

Labelling is a pain re the regs and we actually took a course on this a while ago to make sure we got it right. We were told that there are two things that trading standards will come down on you like a ton of bricks for - incorrect labelling and incorrect weights. I'm not sure if that's true though cos we see a lot of soap sold where the INCI names are wrong or the allergens aren't listed and even where there's no weight mentioned. It could depend on how vigilant trading standards are in your area but we prefer not to take any chances.

                      Hope that helps
                      Lynne

You can buy a set of scales very reasonably price to weigh letters etc would be ideal for weighing small light items and as long as your items dont weigh less than what you say you are in the clear i would recon, no one is going to have you for givving them a little lol
