Recently I was looking at lye suppliers online, and found one that had FOOD GRADE lye...I have never heard of food grade lye, but it said it was better than other grades of lye for soap making. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing - and/or used it in their soap making? The site said it did not damage fragrances as much...that would certainly be terrific!

The site also said that other grades of lye were 99% lye, and one was something like 96% lye - I emailed them and asked what the rest was, and got no reply. It's been about a week. Anyone know what the rest is?

    Hi

I do know that pretzels are coated with lye - in fact I was discussing this with a baker who makes them, they are SA organic - I must ask him if he uses a special lye.

I know lye is used in Chinese cooking. There is a pure one too for cosmetics which is expensive - http://www.romil.com/sars.htm#S
