  • Dumb bead question - please don't be too harsh!

Can anybody tell me if the colour on pearl effect beads and coloured wooden beads rubs off on skin (I'm thinking bracelets). Are there any types of beads that are well known to lose their colour?

    Many thanks

Ive never come across the colour coming off either wooden or pearl beads.
some people react with silver or other metals and their skin oil causes the metal to leave black / green marks on their skin.

I have but it's not so much the colour coming on on skin butrather a flaking can accure if they are cheap beads. ie chips of paint can come off. You can be left with a milky white bead when they are plastic.

As an aside I have some lovely glass beads which where sold to me as wooden painted beads. The paint has started to flake off and now I have some beautiful black glass beads.

Some beads loose their colour if they have been dyed, rather than coated or made out of coloured glass. I've known a few seed beads that do this.

Yes obs, that's what happened to some seed beads that I had - don't want to make that mistake again!

Not a dumb question at all!

Any beads with a painted or other type of applied surface decoration can flake or peel. With the better quality beads though, this is really unlikely - especially with things like nacre pearls where the colour is intrinsic to the bead.

Any surface dyed beads can likewise leech colour onto skin or clothing, again depending on the quality - without getting them in your hand and having a look it can be hard to tell.

I've seen pearls, wooden beads, glass beads and gemstone beads all either flake or stain. I've also seen other, excellent examples of all beads with surface treatments that have proven excellent. It really just depends on the quality of the bead - I've found often - buy cheap, buy twice so always, spend as much as you can afford and you are more likely to get good quality beads.

Dyed wooden beads leach their colour terribly. I bought a blue wooden necklace once and it was during the summer. By the end of the day it looked like someone had tried to strangle me.
