  • Hello! Am I a Crafter!!?

    Hi Everyone!

I just thought I would introduce myself; my name is Gemma and I have joined this forum because I have recently started doing craft exhibitions and surprised about how much I enjoy them!

Now some of you may debate that what I do is/isn't a craft! I make films... 'life through film' is basically a business I set-up to document people's memories. I edit photographs, video footage and add voice-overs, and title screens to create personal life story films. These are created on DVD, VHS and digital picture frames.

I create them for occasions such as birthdays, wedding, anniversaries & remembrances. Just wondered what everyone here classes as a craft? are times changing in the world of craft?!!

    Gemma!

          Re: a crafter?

          Icecreamgirl!

It surprised me after visiting some fairs recently how much the craft market is changing; what I would have thought of as a craft ten years ago has changed considerably.

I enjoy what I do and takes some creativity to get the pictures to flow with the music, titles etc so in my eyes it's a craft and yes it's new as far as i'm aware - in derbyshire anyway!!

              Re - Crafter?

I was thinking about Trentham Gardens as one to try but apart from that I have just tred local ones in the leicestershire area. Any recommendations for ones in derby? I'm actually from Hilton, derbyshire (to be precise!!)

What would you call yourself - 'crafter' or 'artist' ?

                        Re - Crafter?

That's a tough one to call!! would it be awkward to say a bit of both! it could be classed a form of art because I take people's materials and create something; but could also be a craft because it can be learnt with a bit of creativity thrown in!!

Tough question!! Can I phone a friend!!?

Now we get to the subject of 'can you do crossover in Art?' It's done in music - one of the Arts, why not craft/ art? Art does not have to be tangible - it can be an expression, craftwork has to be tangible.............hasn't it?

But what Gemma produces has been crafted by hand - she started with some base element and produced an end-product - just the same as we do with beads, fabric, wax etc.

Oooh - I'm feeling dizzy after that pontificating!

                            to the forum !

                              Re - Crafter?

                              Now Peter...

It's a sunny Monday evening and you have got me started now debating the world of art V craft, expression V tangability, method V result!! whatever your craft/art it's all an expression or it wouldn't be a craft/art - it wouldn't have that individuality and that personal touch. In my eyes anybody can take a few photos and put them on a disc with some practice - my craft/art comes from the way i work those pictures with video, titles, music and how i interract with the person..... after that long winded and rather complicated response - yes there can and should be a crossover!!
