If you varnish the whole area it will stay solid for a lifetime. If not, the damp can penetrate it and cause it to rot. Here is a tutorial for a good firm salt dough. cook really slowly.

Ooh, better varnish it then because it hasn't been! I'll have to ask Rhiannon if she is ok with that idea first though.

Aww That's so cute & very clever :-)! Definitely get it glazed.
I still have the big lump of green painted clay with a hole in it (?) my eldest brought home when he was a wee 4 year old (14 now) we had no idea what it was although we ended up using it as an egg cup! still pangs in my heart when I pick it up :-) memories <3

                    Aww, so lovely!!

Just make sure it doesn't ever get stored anywhere damp, or get wet. I had some salt dough tree decorations that I'd made but they got stored in a damp loft and went all soggy and crumbled (they were varnished too, so the key would be don't let them get damp).

I do still have a little salt dough snail my daughter made about 20 years ago - unpainted, unvarnished - and it's still OK. It's been kept in a box on my dressing table.
