  • Is anyone else fed up?

I am! I'm fed up of spending all my time working for someone else! I don't mind my job but if I had the choice I wouldn't be spending most of my life doing it. Why do we get such a raw deal? Life should be for living! Grrr...sorry all, I know this goes through everyone's mind, just so fed up I had to voice it!

I know, no point dwelling on it. I just need a bit of a lift I think! Maybe selling lots at the next craft fair will do it!!! No, not maybe, definitely!!!!

I'm a Careers Advisor. Like I say I enjoy my job, just wish it wasn't 5 days a week. I could handle 3 days a week, leaving 4 for me!

Can you reduce your hours at all? Even one extra day a week may benefit you.

Would love that - I have been thinking about this for a while. I would feel guilty though as my boyfriend and I have bills and a mortgage to pay, and he has to work 5 days in a job he hates. I think we could manage if I did one day less, but wondered how fair it would be on him? If I could suppliment the money I lose by making it through my crafts that would work, but I think it's going to be a while before that happens.

I went to 3 days when I was teaching, partly due to health issues at the time. But honestly hun, your happiness is more important than money.... plus if you do less hours you will have more time to make your mosaics and promote yourself/website.

(only saying this as I was feeling exactly the same as you about 2 yrs ago)

It has been nagging at me for a long time now. Maybe I need a chat with the OH. Thanks for all your advice and support.

                    Life is too short..

If you aren't happy do something about it. Take the plunge. You don't know untill you try.
Whats the worst that can happen? You can always go back to work full time if you need to ( not that i'm saying you will need to!)
I would never do a job i didn't enjoy, whats the point?
3 years ago i had 3 jobs, so i was earning tripple what i earn now but by giving one up i was no worse off than i am now, This week i am down to 1 job (like a normal person!) as i gave up a job i'd done for 11 years,so that i can do my craft.
Like i said it might not work, but at least i won't be forever wondering what could have been.....
The other thing to remember is you always spend up to your earnings, i'm no worse off now than when i had 3 jobs, so what excactly did i spend all that money on?? It's true that the less you have, the less you need.
Good luck, and go for it!!

I worked in retail for several years and some of those years was tough, and I kept wishing I was my own boss. Then when I left and moved away to live with my partner, I took the opportunity to concentrate on making and selling my cards....boy it has been tough! never knew it would be this hard and at times i wished I was in my old job even though it was depressing me and then at times I feel so glad I'm not there anymore. I am trying my hardest to make my little business a big success and I know at the end of the day I won't want to be working for anyone but ME.

Ooooh another Careers Adviser I used to be one til I gave it up to focus on Natty Netty full time. Loved the job but hated working for Connexions - if that's who you work for too then I can well understand why you're fed up Kate.

                          I/we know how you feel.
My boss told me yesterday he has 2 clocks by his bed and neither of them have the right time.I just sat here and thought to myself 'so thats why he is always late and this ****ing place is so badly organised'.For a second I had a moment of clarity.
I dont particularly like my job but its ideal for jewellery making so il stick at it if I can.

You have my sympathy, and others are right, youl never know if yuo dont give it a try.

Chat with your OH and see what he says - he may not mind you concentrating on your crafts for an extra day a week as it may make you more focused and happy. Slightly different but my hubby started working for himself last year and he said it's the best thing he has ever done - well he would seeing as he is in Goa at the moment on a course! We earn less money now but the excess is going into OUR company and that feels great. Give a go - as someone else said on here you will regret it if you don't try and if it doesn't work then you can always go back.

                              Hi,

yep you should definately give it a go. Just try reducing one day a week. Like others have said you can always go back to five if it became a problem.

I recently gave up my job completely to craft full time. It's very hard and I earn only a tiny fraction of what I earned before.

It is so true that you live up to you earnings. I have a lot less money to play with but the world hasn't ended, I am still here and I am much happier, 1000% happier!!!
Can I keep going like this forever, maybe not. It is a worry, I do need to increase my income as best I can. But I am giving it a go. If it doesn;t work out I can try a part time job and part time crafting, see how that goes.

The thing is to think creatively and flexibly. How can you make little changes to improve you happiness. I took the plunge but it was a calculated risk. My wife is brilliant and is looking to reduce her fulltime work too.

Talk to your OH, I am sure he will be supportive. I am sure he won't think the money risk is the be all and end all. Work out your earnings for the day of work and calculate exactly how (and if) you can earn that from crafting instead. How many item will you have to produce and sell etc...

                              Go for it.
