  • Advice needed on how to clean a toilet

my daughter moved into a house about 6 months ago and it must be the water but her toilet bowl is very badly stained (i have been told other people in the area have the same problem. We have tried pure bleach, bleach tablets and even coke left in it overnight.
    any tips please?

Hi. You could try something like this, or Google 'Milkstone Remover' both contain Phosphoric Acid and are fantastic for removing all sorts of stains. BUT please do not use the toilet with this stuff in it. It won't harm the toilet either.

Sounds like you need a limescale remover. Bleach wont get that off.

KILLROCK gets rid of any limescale but use sparingly and don't breath the fumes in. Cococola ( not the diet one ) will get rid of it but you have to make sure the stain is sat in it not just covered in it.

cilit bang stain and toilet is very good. I used it on our downstairs loo when we moved into our new home as that was badly stained.

We have water so hard you could chip a tooth...ok, maybe an exaggeration, but not by much...I use a hammer and chisel, OR ypu could do this -

Actually, if you get a really good cleaner for rust and scale, it is important to drain as much water out of the toilet bowl as possible, get the sides as dry as possible and then squirt the cleaner all over the sides...and don't use the toilet for several hours. Then flush and see what good it has done.

Commonly used to clean out coffee machines, tea stains, and other such things. Potent stuff.

It will disolve a piece of beef left in a glass of coke completely, ( never drink the stuff personally ) and bring the shine back to a penny.

It sounds gross but lemon juice or white distilled vinegar and salt crystals (rock salt) should lift it if its limescale but it will take some scrubbing. If in doubt I chuck bicarbonate of soda on stuff.

Also from the experts according to my Kim and Aggie cleaning bible (My boyfriends idea of a neat present) sprinkling washing soda (Powder?) into the toilet bowl and leaving overnight should help break it up too. Hope this helps.

If you put a newly extracted tooth in a glass of coke, it will completely disintegrate in 48 hours :-(

Which is one of the reason I don't drink Coke - I don't like it anyway, that's the other reason! It's a great rust remover though.

                            But Sprite's ok right?

The most use I had for Coke recently was changing the colour of some reactive metals. Great fun!

I hate other people's stained toilets!
The stain isn't the problem it's the limescale you need to attack and there's nothing like scrubbing it off bit by bit. Once it's off keep it off and don't let it build up.
What ever you choose to do, chemical or elbow grease, be careful not to damage the surface of the toilet itself or your troubles will never end.

Can anyone help me with my latest one? It's in a downstairs outhouse/extension. I get it sparkly white and clean and it goes black (well dark brown) within days. Could the water becoming in through iron pipes? (And going rusty?) Will I have the same problem when we put the new loo in if we don't rip out the old pipes.......which I don't think we can get to......?
